Asymmetric Passive Components in Microwave Integrated Circuits

Asymmetric Passive Components in Microwave Integrated Circuits
Publisher: Wiley | Pages: 291 | 2006-07-31 | ISBN 0471737488 | PDF | 5 MB
This book examines the new and important technology of asymmetric passive components for miniaturized microwave passive circuits. The asymmetric design methods and ideas set forth by the author are groundbreaking and have not been treated in previous works. Readers discover how these design methods reduce the circuit size of microwave integrated circuits and are also critical to reducing the cost of equipment such as cellular phones, radars, antennas, automobiles, and robots.

An introductory chapter on the history of asymmetric passive components, which began with asymmetric ring hybrids first described by the author, sets the background for the book. It lays a solid foundation with a chapter examining microwave circuit parameters such as scattering, ABCD, impedance, admittance, and image. A valuable feature of this chapter is a conversion table between the various circuit matrices characterizing two-port networks terminated in arbitrary impedances. The correct conversion has also never been treated in previous works.

Leading Global Projects

This book is a must-read for anyone responsible for projects and initiatives that span functional and geographical divides. Authors Moran and Youngdahl bring extensive experience and learning from industry practice to present a clear and straightforward treatment of the leadership skills and knowledge required to lead projects that are global in nature. They have written the first book of its kind to address the three essential skills of global project leaders - strategic project management, project leadership, and cross-cultural leadership.

The authors argue that global project leadership is an essential skill in our project-based world and that we are all either intentional or accidental project leaders. Intentional project leaders pursue formal project management education and even certification whereas accidental project leaders find themselves leading global project and initiatives as a result of a special assignment or promotion. Moran and Youndahl have found that the vast majority of global projects leaders fall into the accidental category and have written the book to be accessible to those who have not necessarily pursued formal project management education. Experienced intentional project managers can skip the single chapter on project management fundamentals to move to the more advanced chapters addressing topics such as influencing without formal authority across functional and geographical boundaries and leading global projects at the edge of crisis.

The only book that combines themes of strategic project management, project leadership and cross-cultural leadership

Rich with examples and stories to illustrate key skills and knowledge required to lead global projects

*Only book to focus on leadership and cross-cultural skills in global project management
*Robert Moran is well-known author in these fields
*Book is designed for easy use in executive education courses

HIGH PERFORMANCE MULTIMEDIA:A Reader on the Technological, Cultural and Economic Dynamics of Multimedia

Product Description
The focus of High Performance Multimedia is on the ever expanding European e-content industry. Production, aggregation and distribution of that content are the starting points to any future development towards a flourishing industry sector of the third millennium. Nevertheless, in addition to the diffusion of knowledge throughout the industry, digitalisation has completely changed the structure of the content business through the dissociation of content and media channel. This movement creates problems in the process of the business.

Highest technological demands in time and money are limiting the size of e-content enterprises today. In contrast, its distribution is still being dominated by broadcasters and telecom providers that skim the biggest part of the profits. However, possibilities do arise when analyzing the industry of e-content. The European e-content market will be able to play a major role in the future by including all relevant players and their abilities. The challenge during the next years will be to stop the concentration on high-end technology and to create new adequate e-content services providing added value to everyone in Europe.

Wiley | March 21, 2003 | ISBN: 0470851023 | 704 pages | PDF | 16 MB

Following on from the hugely successful previous editions, the third edition of Spacecraft Systems Engineering incorporates the most recent technological advances in spacecraft and satellite engineering. With emphasis on recent developments in space activities, this new edition has been completely revised. Every chapter has been updated and rewritten by an expert engineer in the field, with emphasis on the bus rather than the payload.

Encompassing the fundamentals of spacecraft engineering, the book begins with front-end system-level issues, such as environment, mission analysis and system engineering, and progresses to a detailed examination of subsystem elements which represent the core of spacecraft design - mechanical, electrical, propulsion, thermal, control etc. This quantitative treatment is supplemented by an appreciation of the interactions between the elements, which deeply influence the process of spacecraft systems design.

In particular the revised text includes

* A new chapter on small satellites engineering and applications which has been contributed by two internationally-recognised experts, with insights into small satellite systems engineering.

* Additions to the mission analysis chapter, treating issues of aero-manouevring, constellation design and small body missions.

In summary, this is an outstanding textbook for aerospace engineering and design students, and offers essential reading for spacecraft engineers, designers and research scientists. The comprehensive approach provides an invaluable resource to spacecraft manufacturers and agencies across the world.

Ugural's Mechanical Design: An Integrated Approach provides a comprehensive, unified approach to the subject of machine element design for Mechanical Engineering students and practicing engineers. The author's expertise in engineering mechanics is demonstrated in Part I (Fundamentals), where readers are given an exceptionally strong treatment of the design process, stress & strain, deflection & stiffness, energy methods, and failure/fatigue criteria. Advanced topics in mechanics (marked with an asterisk in the Table of Contents) are provided for optional use.

The first 8 chapters provide the conceptual basis for Part II (Applications), where the major classes of machine components are covered. Optional coverage of finite element analysis is included, in the final chapter of the text, with selected examples and cases showing FEA applications in mechanical design.

In addition to numerous worked-out examples and chapter problems, detailed Case Studies are included to show the intricacies of real design work, and the integration of engineering mechanics concepts with actual design procedures. The author provides a brief but comprehensive listing of derivations for users to avoid the "cookbook" approach many books take. Numerous illustrations provide a visual interpretation of the equations used, making the text appropriate for diverse learning styles. The approach is designed to allow for use of calculators and computers throughout, and to show the ways computer analysis can be used to model problems and explore "what if?" design analysis scenarios.

An Online Learning Center website provides a wealth of resources for instructors, students and other readers; and a printed Instructor Solutions Manual is also available.

eBook Science For Humanism: The Recovery of Human Agency

Charles R. Varela, Science For Humanism: The Recovery of Human Agency
Routledge | 2009-03-27 | ISBN: 0415481821 | 352 pages | PDF | 1,8 MB

In the 18th century, the pre-modern Judeo-Greco-Christian problem of freedom and determinism is transformed by Kant into the modern problem of the freedom of human agency in the natural and cultural worlds of deterministic structures; it is this version of the freedom and determinism issue which centres the Science and Humanism debates, and thus marks the history of the social sciences. Anthony Giddens is credited with providing the new vocabulary of 'structure' and 'agency' in order to formulate the problem of freedom and determinism in those terms, thus making this formulation fruitful. In this book, Charles R. Varela proposes that Kant originally formulated this problem, and makes a series of wide-ranging and groundbreaking observations based on Kant's metaphysics of realism which enables Varela to propose a solution to the structure/agency problem. Subjects revisited in this book include: 'Giddens' Call'; the stalemate of the social and psychological sciences; the determinist tradition of modern science; and, postmodernism. This breadth of themes, drawn together by Varela with his work on Kant, fully realizes Giddens' principle that human agency is a real causal force. It is Kant's conception of causal power that is the causal force Giddens' has called for. "Science For Humanism: The Recovery of Human Agency" will be of particular interest to students of humanism and therefore realism, Kant and Giddens.

eBook The Sky at Einstein's Feet

William C. Keel, "The Sky at Einstein's Feet"
Springer | 2005-11-28 | ISBN: 0387261303 | 246 pages | PDF | 23,2 MB

The insights of relativity have illuminated a century of astronomical discovery, often going beyond the phenomena that Einstein lived to see. This book shows, in nonmathematical ways, how deeply these ways of viewing the Universe have informed our interpretations of it, and how many of the amazing discoveries of these decades have made sense only as part of Einstein's universe.

The author brings together the ways in which we see the bizarre effects of relativity played out on a cosmic scale. None of this is particularly new to practicing astronomers, but much has yet to be seen outside technical journals. The presentation avoids mathematics (except for the most famous equation in all of physics!), and is designed to be accessible to the interested public. Gravitational lenses, the visible effects of light-travel delays, the search for black holes, the ways relativity in atomic nuclei makes stars shine, are all treated. In many cases, some of the principals are still alive and provided new commentary on the discoveries. Numerous illustrations are newly produced from data in the archives of such observatories as Hubble and Chandra.
