Research-Based Web Design & Usability Guidelines

Although recent findings show the public increasingly interacting with government Web sites, a common problem is that people can’t find what they’re looking for. In other words, the sites lack usability. The Research-Based Web Design and Usability Guidelines aid in correcting this problem by providing the latest Web design guidance from the research and other forms of evidence. This unique publication has been updated from its earlier version to include over 40 new or updated research guidelines, bringing the total to 209. Primary audiences for the book are: Web managers, designers, and all staff involved in the creation of Web sites. Topics in the book include: home page design, page and site navigation, graphics and images, effective Web content writing, and search. A new section on usability testing guidance has been added. Experts from across government, industry, and academia have reviewed and contributed to the development of the Guidelines. And, since their introduction in 2003, the Guidelines have been widely used by government, private, and academic institutions to improve Web design.

Taking A Stand On Our National Debt

The author has chosen to use a question-answer format in order to make the often complex subject matter, easier and more enjoyable to read. Q and A is not a dialogue bewteen real people -- the author has provided the dialogue for both Q, standing for Quaero, which is Latin means "I search for" and A, Auctor, which in Latin means "person responsible."

Q- I understand you have been following the federal budget process closely for the past ten years. How did you get interested in a subject which most people find extremely boring as well as complicated?

A- My interest can be traced to 1982 and the formation of the Grace Commission.

Q- What is the Grace Commission?

A- The Grace Commission, originally known as the President's Private Sector Survey on Cost Control was established in February 1982 when President Reagan asked prominent businessman, J. Peter Grace to head a commission for the purpose of conducting a comprehensive study of government spending. The Commission was privately funded and consisted of 161 high-level private business executives familiar with cost control and efficiency.

When the Commission began its work I eagerly anticipated the results, naively thinking they would come up with a relatively quick and easy way out of our national debt problems.

Q- It sure looks like they didn't do their job.

A- Oh but they did. The Commission originally came up with 2,478 recommendations, which if implemented, would have saved $424.2 billion over three years.

Q- Then they didn't follow through?

A- More than half (1,426 proposals) had been implemented by the end of fiscal year 1987.

Q- Then why does our debt keep growing?

A- Eliminating waste is only one part of the problem. Our elected officials have continued on an unprecedented spending spree. You've no doubt heard that it took 204 years to accumulate the nation's first one trillion of debt but only 4 years to accumulate the second trillion.

Q- Which four years?

A- 1981 -1985. The debt ceiling was raised in 1985 to 1.823 trillion and then again in 1986 to 2.3 trillion. But, as was so often said during the eighties, "You, ain't seen nothing yet! " With nobody seeming to care, our elected officials kept spending. In 1990 the ceiling had to be raised to $3.5 trillion but the spending continued so that in 1991 the debt ceiling quietly passed the $4 trillion mark.

Q- You're right. I didn't hear anything about it, and if I had I wouldn't know what to make of it. This may sound stupid, but I doubt that I'm the only one confused about how the deficit is measured. It seems there are a lot of very different numbers out there all claiming to be the deficit.

A-You're absolutely right to be confused and your confusion is the result of intentional obfuscation.

A New Tax System for the United States

A New Tax System for the United States proposes elimination of the personal and corporate income tax system in the United States. The central theme of the book is that the income tax system is not only a bad tax system from an economic viewpoint, but that it has severe political and sociological drawbacks as well. The book describes how the invasion of privacy and authoritarian tactics on which the current system is based have seriously damaged the relationship of the US citizen to his government.

The book describes the inadequacies of the current US tax system; its incredible complexity; its undesirable economic incentives which discourage saving, investment, and economic growth; the high administrative cost; the instability in government revenues caused by a narrow, volatile tax base; the incentive for wasting productivity in tax avoidance; the problem it causes in international trade; the invasion of privacy; and the tyranny of the IRS. The book shows how the Tax Reform Act of 1986 has not solved the fundamental problems of the income tax system, and explores why the US Government has perpetuated such a bad tax system for so long.

A major problem with the current US tax system is its inability to produce a sufficient level of revenue to cover desired government programs. The current system has resulted in massive government deficits and extreme wealth concentrations that threaten US and world economic collapse. The new tax system proposed in this book addresses these problems; it can help avoid economic collapse and reduce the severity of depressions.

The historical development and inadequacies of the US tax system are summarized. The archaic legislative process by which the current system was developed is described, and a modern approach to "tax engineering," based on the concepts of systems analysis and systems engineering, is presented. Alternative tax methods are identified, and the advantages and disadvantages of each method are discussed. A new tax system, based on the value-added tax, or "VAT," is proposed. The book shows how the VAT can raise the same or greater revenues as the current income tax system, but with far less economic, political, and sociological cost. The new system takes a humanistic approach to taxation: the tax system is viewed as a servant of the citizen, rather than his master. The VAT is a practical and feasible alternative to the income tax system.

Through the income tax system, the US Government has set up an elaborate and powerful police-state system for regimentation of the individual citizen. You are registered and monitored, and have lost not only your privacy but most of your Bill of Rights personal liberties to the IRS. This book tells how you can help eliminate the income tax and stop the intrusion of the IRS into your life.

Public Finance

1. In any society that has passed beyond the lowest stage of social development, some form of governmental organisation is found to be an essential feature. The various activities or functions of this controlling body furnish the material for what are known as the 'Political Sciences' (Staatswissenschaften). Every governing body or 'State' requires for the due discharge of its functions repeated supplies of commodities and personal services, which it has to apply to the accomplishment of whatever ends it may regard as desirable. The processes involved in obtaining and using these supplies naturally vary much in the several stages of social advance: they are comparatively simple and direct in a primitive community, while in a modern industrial society they present a high degree of complication, and are carried out by elaborate regulations. For all States, however—whether rude or highly developed—some provisions of the kind are necessary, and therefore the supply and application of state resources constitute the subject-matter of a study which is best entitled in English, Public Finance.

Educating Children With Autism by Committee On Educational Interventions For Children With Autism

Executive Summary

Autistic spectrum disorders are present from birth or very early in development and affect essential human behaviors such as social interaction, the ability to communicate ideas and feelings, imagination, and the establishment of relationships with others. Although precise neurobiological mechanisms have not yet been established, it is clear that autistic spectrum disorders reflect the operation of factors in the developing brain. Autistic disorders are unique in their pattern of deficits and areas of relative strengths. They generally have lifelong effects on how children learn to be social beings, to take care of themselves, and to participate in the community. The autism spectrum occurs along with mental retardation and language disorder in many cases. Thus, educational planning must address both the needs typically associated with autistic disorders and needs associated with accompanying disabilities.

Education, both directly of children, and of parents and teachers, is currently the primary form of treatment for autistic spectrum disorders. The education of children with autistic disorders was accepted as a public responsibility under the Education of All Handicapped Children Act in 1975. Despite the federal mandate, however, the goals, methods and resources available vary considerably from state to state and school system to school system. In the last few years, due to a confluence of factors, courts have become increasingly active in determining the methods and resources allocated by school systems for the education of young children with autistic spectrum disorders.

Constructive Thinking: The Key to Emotional Intelligence

Most people believe their emotions are automatic reactions to events. Events happen and trigger emotions, and that is all there is to it. Few realize that their emotions are determined by what they think, by how they interpret the events, and not by the events themselves. As Epstein demonstrates throughout the book, this insight provides a powerful tool for controlling emotions and becoming the type of person one wants to be. To a considerable extent this book stresses the techniques of cognitive therapy and how they can be utilized in everyday life. Epstein goes beyond this, however, to provide a theory of personality based on a new and effective view of the unconscious. Many readers will find the "how-to" features sufficient for their purposes; professionals and students in psychology, however, will find the principles set forth useful in their own teaching and research. Review: Epstein Removes the clutter In a world filled with folks who want to "clutter" up the concept or goal of human thinking, it is so refreshing to find a book that reaches back to the essence of what makes us...well, such cool and complicated creatures--the melding of our emotional and rational minds operating in a purposeful way. One can find many a book on the bestsellers list these days whose authors actually complicate the wolrld of human perception for their own profit. Gardner's books on varying IQ and Goleman's on emotional intelligence offer (or at least imply) the reader what I consider hurtful advice: that you are limited as a human being based on biological forces and that you should accept what you're "good at," doing the best you can with what you've been given. Thankfully, Prof. Epstein puts personal desire and motivation back into the mix; showing the reader that one can achieve, in most cases, what one wants in life if one properly aligns his or her experiential and rational minds to reflect his or her desires and does the work to constructively create the thinking necessary to reach his or her goal. This is a book that should be referenced often by those who seriously believe that, with a bit of guidence from Epstein, they can reorganize their thinking processes; thus freeing themselves from the bounds of thier emotional and irrational prisons. Review: great book Def. a thinking mans book, while the topic is EQ, this book requires a fair amount of IQ to grasp the concepts as he give the reason behind the theories. Everything he says is backed by a LOT of supporting evidence, but most of it feals right like you knew that all along. one thing I found is my constructive thinking is actually rather good, which I now point to the reason why I maintain low levels of stress. (I also realized how screwed up my now ex girlfriend is and why she is such a stress head...) I learned WAY more about how people think than I did in my psychology class. I now pay attention to my internal dialog and think of how constructing my thinking is and if it is not, how and what I should be thinking. for the most part my blunders are mostly calling myself a dumb*** after I do something stupid and fear of aproaching women and such, but i highly value this book and would recomend it to anyone who wants to learn how the thought process REALLY works. One bad thing is the title of the book, people would ask me what I'm reading and after showing them they woudn't know what to think and I'd have to give a little discription. Its probably one of the main reasons this book passed over by most people...
Review: Epstein steals the show I have dozens of books of this genre and Epstein steals the show. Incredibly well written, Constructive Thinking is extremely well researched and very balanced in its approach. His 'two mind' theory is profound and (as another reviewer mentioned) just makes sense. His theory powerfully advances the premise the we alone are responsible for our emotional reactions to things and people...and are not simply automatic. Thus, we control our destiny far more than others would have us believe. This is an inspiring message, as it suggests we that we can create new experiences and unlearn that which had previouly held us back. This is a 'two highlighter' book which you'll be referring to over and over. Every chapter in my book is marked with not only interesting but truly important insights. I thought so much of Epstein's work that I dedicated a chapter in my upcoming book The Big AHA: Breakthroughs in Resolving and Preventing Workplace Conflict. If you want to put emotional intelligence in proper context, you must read this book.
Review: a book about thinking rather than emotions In 1998, when Epstein wanted to update his book "You're Smarter Than You Think: How to Develop Your Practical Intelligence for Successful Living" (1993), he decided to add 2 rather academic chapters discussing Goleman's and others' views on Emotional Intelligence. Epstein's view is that emotions (as opposed to "moods") always occur after thinking, even if the thinking may be "unconcious" at most occasions. This view is the opposite from what others, such as Goleman write: they argue thinking come after emotions. Of course, both parties have "evidence" to back up their claims. My sugestion: the two views are useful! The previous paragraph indicates that Epstein's book ONLY covers the "constructive thinking" part of developing emotional intelligence, and if you want a book for that, I must say that he did a great job, building on the work of rational-emotive theraphy and cognitive psychology. He includes a very interesting questionnaire which helps you to figure out how constructive your current thinking is and gives you tools to avoid boby traps of automatic thinking and to recognize typical patterns of destructive thoughts. Unfortunately, this book is too limited to be "the" book to increase your EQ in all its aspects.
Review: Developing Emotional Intelligence thro'constructive thinking This is one authentic book which shows practical ways to enhance emotional intelligence. The art of controlling emotions so that maximum benefit is derieved in daily happenings is well explained in the book. The book right through stresses the need for implementing the 'understanding' and the strategies explained are practical and implementable. The author has given a questionnaire to test the level of one's constructive thinking called Consructive Thinking Inventory. I am drawn to the book because of its 'application-value'and to the chapter (VIII) dealing with achieving success in the workplace through constructive thinking - which is the need of the hour for all the executives and workers alike. The book also explains how constructive thinking can reduce stress and increase interpersonal adjustment, thus increasing one's emotional intelligence and control. The book has a wealth of conceptual wisdom on thinking and its effect on emotional well-being of people. One of the very well researched books to go through.Prof.Dr.B.Janakiram, Mgmt.Dept. Extremely popular, this student-friendly text presents the practical areas of statistics in terms of their relevance to medicine and the life sciences. Includes many illustrative examples and challenging problems that reinforce the authors unique and intuitive approach to the subject. The new edition features a new two-color design, examples taken from current biomedical literature, and review questions within each chapter. Review: Best stats book out there without the errors of the 6th edition The quickest, most accurate stats book out there. Warning: you must read it carefully, you can't really skim. That said, if you do read it carefully, even just the first few chapters, you will truly understand basic stats. Before reading this I didn't get significance or what a t-test really meant. Now I can speak the lingo and critically assess other authors work. Just a great book if you give it a few hours to sink in.
Get the 5th edition, not the 6th, for some reason the 6th is full of typos and errors in the examples. Review: good material, too many errors It's a decent book overall. The material is not too hard to underestand, and there are a lot of medical examples. However, there's nearly a typo on every other page. I wouldn't mind if the mistakes were minor, but it's too much when a third of the solutions are wrong, and statistical tables are incorrect (e.g. 6-8 & 6-9). Review: Non-mathematical introduction to biostatistics This is not a treatise in mathematics. The author uses easy to understand examples to explain concepts. Other reviewers have noted typos that altered their learning experience; I have not. Other reviewers report that the presentation of ANOVA is not easily understood; I disagree. Statisticians that are used to the Fisher and Scheff methods of explaining ANOVA will clearly find this different. I actually found it useful to present ANOVA before the T-test and to use the examples he did. Glantz's text on regression and ANOVA is also very good.
Review: Lots of mistakes in this book The concept of this book is good-cut to the chase and give lots of relevent examples. However, the book has innumerable typos which can make it very dificult to follow the text. Some sections are just incomprehensible such as the section on power calculations for the chi square test. Most of the exercises at the end of the chapter are heavy on arithmetic and light on conceptual issues. Often the answers to the exercises are wrong. All these typos are really unacceptable for a fifth edition. I am at Amazon looking for another text to keep as a reference. By way of disclaimer, I am taking

the author's course on introductory biostatistics and am doing average.

Neuroepidemiology is the epidemiologic study of neurological conditions. This fine text provides a comprehensive and accessible overview of research methods for conducting epidemiologic and clinical research on these conditions. It is aimed at neurologists, epidemiologists and public health professionals, as well as students of these disciplines. The book has three parts, each emphasizing the unique aspects of studying neurologic disorders. The first focuses on classic principles of epidemiologic and clinical research, including study design, sources of study bias, and methods for assessing the role of environmental and genetic factors in neurologic disorders. The second part covers each of the major neurologic disorders, with an emphasis of the methodologic aspects of studying these disorders and discussion of future research directions. The third part is devoted to clinical and translational research methods, including the design and conduct of clinical trials and prognostic studies, as well as the principles of health services research and evidence-based medicine. This textbook will give neurologists, epidemiologists, and their students the foundation for conducting rigorous epidemiologic and clinical research on neurologic disorders. Review: Excellent book - readable & comprehensive! Having read other similar texts, I believe that this is the best book available on the topic of neuroepidemiology. This is the only book that gives a broad coverage of the study design and research principles for conducting clinical and epidemiologic research on neurological disorders. Research topics related to all of the major neurological disorders are addressed. I particularly liked the extensive use of real-life examples to illustrate important points. The section on clinical epidemiology - clinical trials, prognostic studies and evidence-based neurology - is superb. Last but not least - this is the least expensive book on neuroepidemiology and far better than the others. Can't say enough good things!
